Wvrst | Quack Quack Fries

Canadian winters can sometimes make it difficult to plan any type of event with snowstorms creeping up whenever they please. Every year, my bff Mila tries to plan her birthday celebrations around old man winter and somehow bad weather eventually takes over. This year, she opted for a lunch outing at Wvrst in hopes of dodging any evening snow squalls.

At first glance, Wvrst reminded me of a high school cafeteria with communal tables throughout the restaurant. There is no specific waiter or assigned seating, it's basically a first come first serve type of atmosphere and they bring you the food after you order and pay for it at the front counter. It's a simple place with 4 main items on the menu: beer, fresh sausage, french fries and dipping sauces.

There are twenty-two all natural, gluten free sausages available from game, traditional, heritage breed, vegetarian, poultry and specialty. Order your sausage on a bun or as a currywvrst; sliced sausages served with country bread and tomato curry sauce. Toppings can be added if you please. Plain or duck fat fries is their only side item.

This wasn't Mila's first time there so I decided to go with her recommendations and ordered the chicken artichoke and basil sausage. We all shared a large order of duck fat fries and plain fries. Each order came with two dipping sauces, we decided on: chive & roasted garlic, wvrst, chipotle and truffle mushroom mayo.

At first bite, the sausage itself had a delicious coarse texture, it was very well seasoned and I could definitely taste the artichoke and basil. I added sweet sauteed onions and sauteed jalapenos to mine. I would definitely eat this again.

The much-hyped duck fat fries were rather disappointing. None of us could taste a major difference between duck fat and plain fries. The dipping sauces definitely amped up the flavour. Chipotle didn't really do it for me and Wvrst was not as spicy as advertised. The chive & roasted garlic and truffle mushroom mayo were the two that stood out in flavour for me.

If you're in search of a comfortable, casual atmosphere to enjoy a cold beer and a sausage, this is where it's at.
